Dimensional measures for SQA National 5 Maths

This page covers the following topics:
1. Length
2. Area
3. Volume
Length is a measure of the distance between two points. It is given in mm, cm and m.
Area is a measure of the amount of space inside a 2D-shape. It is calculated by multiplying the length and width of a shape. Area is given in units mm², cm² and m².
Volume is a measure of the amount of space inside a 3D-shape. It is calculated by multiplying the length, width and height of a shape. Area is given in units mm³, cm³ and m³.

1
Find the total area of the given shape.
Area = 4(4) + 10(2) = 36 cm².

2
Find the total area of the given shape.
Area = 3(3) + 3(3) + 2(12) = 42 cm².

3
What is the area of a rectangle of side 4 cm and 8 cm?
Area = 4(8) = 32 cm².
4
Calculate the area of the given shape.
By separating the shape into two rectangles, area = 4(7) + 3(4) = 40 cm².

5
Five identical paper squares of side 3 cm are lined up next to each other. Calculate the total length.
Length = 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 25 cm.
